MR.
& MRS. LOUIS H. 0 ‘BRYAN, SR.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis H. 0 ‘Bryan celebrated fifty-two years of life together,
and together they went home to God on the afternoon of the incredible
disaster that swept away so much of our beloved Brandenburg on April 3,
1974.
Louis Henry 0 ‘Bryan, Sr., one of seven children, was born to Henry and
Julia (Sims)
O’Bryan in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, on February 22, 1881. Mr. O’Bryan
attended schools in Breckinridge County and received his college education
at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana. During his college years, he
and two brothers, Herman and Ambrose, with Mr. Percy Fullenwider, formed an
orchestra and played the old riverboats that plied the Ohio and Green
Rivers. After teaching at Valparaiso University he was named Professor of
English at the now defunct Columbian College in Owensboro, Kentucky. After a
number of years, he gave up his teaching career and joined the Royal
Typewriter Company as Branch Manager of the Evansville, Indiana, office. He
was later associated with the Underwood Typewriter Company in Louisville,
Kentucky. He owned a farm in Daviess County and subsequently one in the
Little Bend section of Meade County where he resumed his teaching career
for the Meade County Board of Education from which he was retired. Mr. and
Mrs. 0 ‘Bryan
had lived in Brandenburg for the past 21 years. Mrs. O’Bryan was born
Martine Elizabeth Payne on November 10, 1891 at Knottsville, Daviess County,
Kentucky, one of ten children of Marshall and Jane (Raley) Payne. She at-
tended school at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Owensboro, Ky. and Cedar Grove
Academy, Louisville, Ky. She was a graduate of the St. Thomas Hospital

MRS. ADDIE DITTO
Mrs. Addie Ditto, 73 years old, was the 31st victim of the tornado. She died
Thursday, April 9, 1974, after a six day stay in Ireland Army Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Shanklin of Louisville, two
grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 12, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church
in Louisville, with burial in Cap Anderson Cemetery.
The following tribute to Mrs. Ditto was written by a long time friend, Mrs.
Lois Groves, a member of the Hardin family, for whom Mrs. Ditto had worked
for many years.
"I had known Addie Ditto practically all her life. She lived across the road
from the old graveyard pond and we lived below it toward town, so we all
fished together there quite often. Her father was Henry Mosley and her
mother, Ellen Burch Mosley. She had a brother with whom my brother, Hayard,
played. Her mother died when she was quite young.
Addie went to school at the grade school out on the Payneville road and
finished there.
She grew up and married Johnny Owings and had one daughter, Marjorie, now
living in Louisville. After Johnny died, she came to cook and clean for Guy
and Irby Hardin off and on for the next fifty years. In the meantime, she
married Henry Ditto by whom she had a daughter, Lucille, who preceded her in
death.
All of Irby Hardin's sisters and brother, whenever they came to visit, were
glad to see Addie and to partake of her good cooking. We always remembered
her delicious biscuits and fried chicken. John Richard and Rachel, son and
daughter of the Hardins, were closely associated with her all their lives.
She corrected and criticized their behavior even as she did her own
children's. She was like one of the family.
Soon after Irby Hardin died, Guy said nobody could cook to suit him but
Addie, so she came back and stayed until he died. When I came back to
Brandenburg to live in the Hardin house, Addie was always ready to come help
whenever I needed her.
On the morning of April 3rd, the day the tornado struck, she and I had been
to the bank and the grocery and I had let her out at her house about 12
o'clock, never dreaming that would be the last time we would see each other.
I hurried home to greet my sister, Rachelle Hinchcliffe, and niece, Harriet
Ann Fast, who had lunch with me. Since it looked like a rain storm was
brewing, they decided they would leave in order to get back to Louisville
before the rain and they left about three, thereby missing the tornado when
it struck. I cleaned up the luncheon things and lay down on my bed for a
rest. Soon I heard a violent wind blowing, and sounds like a freight train
passing. I jumped up and ran into the kitchen thinking the big old trees
close to the rear of the house might fall on the house and I had better get
out of the way. The next thing I knew I was flat on my face and held down by
something heavy, only able to move one hand. Some time must have passed. It
was deathly quiet and dark. I could see nothing. I passed in and out of
consciousness. Later I realized my right hand was resting on top of a tin
cart that had been beside the refrigerator and I began to knock on it. Later
still, I learned the refrigerator had partly covered me and no doubt saved
me from being crushed. I heard voices, Henry Coleman or Leslie Jenkins
calling my name. There were men around but I could see nothing.
The next I knew I was being loaded in a helicopter but do not remember being
unloaded at Ireland Hospital at Fort Knox.
Addie also was flown to Fort Knox. My son and my sister found her the next
day on another floor. Her daughter, Marjorie, was there and came faithfully
each day to stay with her. They said her house was completely destroyed and
she was picked up in her yard apparently not hurt too bad. But she got worse
and on Tuesday, April 9th, she passed away. Nobody told me in Intensive Care
Unit, until several days after the funeral was over. I felt greatly
bereaved. They told me of her funeral services at the Mt. Vernon Missionary
Baptist Church in Louisville and the interment at Cap Anderson Cemetery in
Brandenburg. John Hardin and his sons from Henderson; Asbury Groves,
Pittsburgh; Steve Beluk, Ashland, Ky.; and Rachelle Hinchcliffe of
Louisville were the only members of our family able to attend.
I think as long as any of us live who knew her we will remember Addie with
great affection and when we get together each will have an anecdote to tell
of her through the many years we knew her .-Mrs. Lois Groves.
